Project Information

Sheraton Bucharest Hotel, previously known as Howard Johnson Grand Plaza , is a 5-star hotel in Bucharest, located in the city center, on Calea Dorobantilor in sector 1.
Dorobanti Hotel, situated in downtown Bucharest, in the former Cosmonautilor Square, was built in 1973 after the plans drawn by architect Virgil Nitulescu. It was one of the first post-war luxury hotels, with 270 rooms. The exterior expression follows the same principles as similar buildings in the ’60s and ’70s. After 1990, the complex was turned into a public limited company, a convenient way to take over state property at a bargain price. Later, in 2004, the new owners signed a partnership with an international hotel chain Howard Johnson Grand Plaza. Since then, the renovation works were adapted to the requirements of the investor and the building suffered major alterations, both inside and outside. The current aspect is no longer in accordance with the original architectural concept.
Howard Johnson Grand Plaza was opened in 2004 , in place of the former Hotel Dorobanti, inaugurated in 1974, following an investment of about 30 million euros, carried out over a period of four years. The year 2005 is the first full year of operation of the hotel. The hotel was owned by SC Grand Plaza Hotel SA, established in 2004 and controlled by businessman Gabriel Popoviciu.
Sheraton Bucharest Hotel, the first hotel under the Sheraton brand in Romania, was inaugurated on August 25, 2015, following an investment of 6 million euros that began in the fall of 2014, when the American Starwood hotel group , owned by Marriott International , signed a contract franchise with Grand Plaza Hotel SA.
The hotel had 285 rooms spread over 18 floors, being a landmark both in Bucharest architecture and in the hotel landscape. To these are added a conference center with over 800 seats, two restaurants and bars, a health center and underground parking.
